The Jerk

1979

Directed By Carl Reiner

Cinematography by Victor J. Kemper

Plot Summary

Navin Johnson is a grown man who sets out to "be somebody" (which to him, starts out with simply having his name in the phone book). His naive journey is filled with rags and riches, love and heartbreak, all in the midst of a whirlwind of comedic incidents and conversations.

My Thoughts

It's hard to pick a favorite from Steve Martin, but this one - which was his first feature film - is a classic and arguably his best. He and his trusty dog "Shithead" follow a path filled with laughs and quirky shenanigans. Bernadette Peters is a great co-star and brings another innocent, but more in-tune, touch to the sensibility of the plot.
